Preceptuation in the Opus, family accompaniment or proselytism?

Here we continue with one eye on the Valencian Community and, in this bulletin specifically, both on the situation of the 20,000 students who have been left without an educational center. We immediately talked about his situation, which is still far from being resolved two weeks later.

But before going into that in detail, I am going to talk to you about the other big topic that we have published this week: the small (large) educational empire that Opus Dei has set up in Spain. From there, the organization created by Escrivá de Balaguer practices its proselytism, often with public money. Because the big figures about the sector suggest that the business is not (at least not exclusively) economic. It is another, which moves in the field of intangibles and influence.

The Work manages, directly or indirectly, more than 90 schools and three universities throughout Spain. Tens of thousands of students pass through its classrooms, who often only have classmates of the same sex. The vast majority of the centers that still segregate in Spain are in the Opus environment.

He market It is dominated by four large groups: Fomento de Centros de Enseñanza, Attendis, COAS and the Institució Familiar d’Educació, which at the same time distribute themselves geographically across the country. There are also particular initiatives and the cake is crowned with three universities. Among them is the University of Navarra, founded by Escrivá de Balaguer himself and which in turn owns the IESE business school, probably the most influential in the country with an MBA at a rate of 110,000 euros.

Back at schools, one of the most unknown – although also common – issues that are carried out there are the so-called preceptuations, a kind of extended tutorials, also for families, who move between the coaching and open proselytism, according to what internal sources who know them tell us: they start from a good place, they say, but they can deviate.

Needless to say, beyond each person’s personal beliefs, what seems more than questionable to us is that public funds are dedicated to financing all this. And many Opus schools are subsidized, so they receive money from everyone. Even today, although Lomloe prohibits it, there are centers that segregate their students while receiving public funds. If someone wants their children to go to religious centers (and they practice this, not everyone does) they are free to do so, but they must pay for it.

I leave you the full article here and we’re going to Valencia.

This week we talked about…

  • Valencia resumes educational activity with doubts. Two weeks after the floods, the Generalitat tries to normalize the situation of the students affected by DANA. This Monday they returned to classes in 47 centers, once cleaned and returned to something resembling normality. But for many the problems remain. Javier told us that they have lost both cars and cannot move; They need transportation alternatives or for a space to be created in the town where they can leave their children and return to work, a situation they share with many others. There is also some concern for the 2nd year Baccalaureate students, who have lost two very valuable weeks ahead of the selectivity test.
  • Specific mention deserves the action of the Emergency Committee of the University of Valencia, led by its rector Mavi Mestre. You have probably heard it: when DANA arrived at the UV – which had the same information as the Government – there was no one there because classes had been canceled the day before due to the weather situation. This decision, which Mazón described as “exaggerated” (another one on his particular list), probably avoided more serious consequences. Here you have a story of how it was taken, told by its protagonists.

  • Does your child have problems with computers? Buy books. It is one of the conclusions of the international report on computer literacy and computational thinking published this Tuesday. The line that separates those who perform better and worse is specifically having 26 specimens at home. Outside of this correlation – common in Education, books and parental studies tend to be the big difference – the report speaks of a generalized low level of computing, also in Spain, and the effect that this has on many issues. For example, the difficulty of young people in distinguishing hoaxes. The details are in this article.
  • From horses to mediators: schools are dedicated to emotional well-being. With 52.3% of young people with symptoms related to anxiety and one in two with difficulties associated with a low mood, it is not surprising that there is concern in schools. The Ministry has rewarded some for their involvement. We tell you about some projects, ranging from horse therapy to music therapy.
  • Only one among 40 in Cantabria. It is a story seen so many times, but we will continue to bring it up as many times as necessary: those responsible for the Selectivity in Cantabria have designed a History test that includes a list of 40 great characters among whom there is only one woman. The exam also does not comply with the regulations this year in terms of its design, but at least in this the community is not alone, as we already told you a few weeks ago.

To upload grade

  • “There should be a subject of…”. Fill the space with your favorite idea. You will have heard the formula, it is heard basically every time there is a big controversial topic that people know nothing about, or a report that leaves students in a bad light. If it were up to some, young people would have 56 subjects a year. This text reflects on this question, where demands of this type usually come from and how the curriculum is configured.

  • In memoriam: Julio Carabaña. He died as he was, discreetly, after an illness that he had not reported “so as not to disturb.” A renowned sociologist, “he was obsessed with education as a driver of collective or individual progress, social mobility, the so-called ‘elevator’ today. Also social classes and inequality,” Emilio Ramo de Espinosa writes in his obituary. Rest in peace, Julio.
  • The PSOE proposes generalizing the two teachers in the classroom. It is an alternative to lowering the ratios, and there are those who say that it is a better solution because the teachers would complement each other. This proposal is in the presentation of the Federal Congress of the PSOE along with others such as creating a scholarship program in the style of doctoral degrees for those who want to compete in the large civil service bodies of the State.

With this we finish for today.

Thank you for being there, for coming down here, for the feedback what you give us

See you next week!
