The PP and Vox have refused to participate this Tuesday in the first vote of the Plenary of Congress of the eleven candidates proposed by the PSOE, Sumar, ERC, Junts, PNV and Podemos to be part of the RTVE Board of Directors, whose renewal has been promoted by the coalition government.
The vote was carried out by call and by ballot in a ballot box, and the deputies of the PP and Voxdespite being called, have remained in their seats, refusing to participate. Their spokespersons did participate in the previous debate, but to denounce the change in the election system promoted by the Government via decree law.
In this first attempt, a two-thirds majority is required, which is unattainable given the opposition of PP and Vox, so the final vote will be on Thursday, when an absolute majority will suffice. Of course, to reach those 176 votes In the secret vote on Thursday it is necessary that two factors coincide: one, that there are no casualties in the ranks of the proponents (now there are 174), and two, win at least two votes from Compromís and the BNG, who are against this reform of RTVE because it means applying the same things that they have criticized to the PP in their communities, or that of the Canarian Coalition, a formation which maintains that the priority should be to agree on immigration reform, or that of former minister José Luis Ábalosinvestigated for alleged corruption by the Supreme Court.
When the Chamber Board opened an express period of just over 24 hours to present candidates to the RTVE Council, even before the validation of the Government decree that lowers the majorities necessary to approve the appointments was voted in Plenary, only the PSOE and its partners presented names and to fill the eleven places that correspond to electing the Lower House.
Thus, the eleven places were distributed as follows: six for the PSOE, two for Sumar and one for ERC, Junts, PNV and Podemos. In this way, they left the four seats in the Senate for the PP, since in the Upper House the ‘popular’ have an absolute majority.
The candidates passed an exam before the Consultative Commission on Appointments of Congress and were endorsed with the vote against Vox and in the absence of the PP, which only intervened at the beginning to denounce the urgency of the procedure to “control” RTVE while the effects of the DANA catastrophe.
Candidates linked to the Government and their partners
A good part of the candidates chosen by the PSOE and its partners are closely linked to the parties that have been proposed to them. Thus, the Podemos candidate is the musical announcer Mariano Muniesaspecialized in the world of heavy metal and rock in general, which was in the candidacy of Pablo Iglesias in the 2021 elections in the Community of Madrid, in position number 30.
For its part, Junts presented Miquel Calçada ‘Mikimoto‘, a TV3 presenter who was on the Junts pel Sí lists and proposed as a senator. ERC’s bet is Sergi Sol, a close collaborator of Oriol Junqueras, while the PNV chose the former Minister of Education of the Government of Navarra and former representative of Geroa Bai María Roncesvalles.
From Sumar, they have promoted the journalist Maria Teresa Martinwho was a member of the RTVE Intercenter Committee for CCOO, and the former En Comú deputy Marta Ribas, who at the last minute left the historic TVE journalist Paloma del Río off the list.
The PSOE, for its part, has elected Esther de la MataDirector of Communication of Minister Félix Bolaños; Angélica Rubio, director of elplural.com and who worked in Moncloa with President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero; the journalist and writer Mercedes de Pabloswho directed Canal Sur when the PSOE governed and who has been part of socialist lists in Seville; and the singer-songwriter Pink Lionwho was once a PSOE councilor in the Madrid City Council.
José Pablo, the Government’s favorite to preside over RTVE
And his sixth name is the former RTVE Content Director José Pablo López, dismissed in March by the previous interim president Elena Sánchez amid the controversial signing of David Broncano, and who appears in the pools as a possible candidate for the presidency of the Corporation.
For the candidates to be elected, a qualified majority of two-thirds (233 votes) will be needed on Tuesday and, failing that, the vote will be repeated on Thursday, after 48 hours, where it will be enough to achieve the absolute majority (176).
Meanwhile, in the Senate the deadline to present candidates will end this week, with the question of whether the PP will register names or maintain its boycott of the Government’s plans.
Afterwards, the RTVE Council that is established will choose from among those elected the person who will occupy the Presidency. And if the procedure is frustrated due to lack of advisors
