Powerlifting|Arnold Schwarzenegger covered the US study in his newsletter.
Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger77, shared with his fans a trick last week that may make it possible to build muscle while eating less than necessary.
“If you want to increase muscle growth, you need to eat more than you burn. However, new research offers a clue that it may be possible to break the rules and build muscle in a calorie deficit.” Fitness Volt -site says that Schwarzenegger was glowing in his newsletter.
Action hero refers to the US studywhich investigated the effect of wheat protein and EAA nutritional supplements, i.e. extra essential amino acids, on protein synthesis.
It is an essential, but complex, biological process in which cells generate protein for muscle growth.
A total of 17 adults between the ages of 20 and 32 participated in the peer-reviewed study. After training, they consumed a recovery drink containing wheat protein, to which either carbohydrate or EAA had been added.
It turned out that in those who consumed the latter drink, protein synthesis remained at the same level as it would have been without an energy deficit. Normally, the process slows down if a person is in a calorie deficit, i.e. eats less than they consume.
Fitness Volt Schwarzenegger raved about the discovery in his newsletter.
“The drink with added EAA had an anabolic effect. It means that the drink boosted protein synthesis by 30 percent while reducing muscle protein breakdown (both are good for muscle growth),” Schwarzenegger reportedly wrote.
However, the former governor of California reminded that it is still difficult to say at this point how much EAA nutritional supplements actually affect overall muscle growth.
“Other studies have repeatedly found that the total amount of protein eaten per day has a greater effect on muscle growth than boosting protein synthesis after exercise.”
In the Olympic Committee working as a nutritional therapist Kaisa Salin Schwarzenegger is on the right track.
“I haven’t read the study in question, but it sounds really smart. The physiological basis is that you can maintain muscle strength if you consume enough protein, even if you are in a calorie deficit.”
“Another question is whether it is necessary to consume protein drinks for that. In practice, it would be the same thing to eat protein-rich food”, Sali reflects.
He throws in an alternative snack tip.
“The berry jam would have more nutritional value than protein drinks. I would say that drinks should be used when it is convenient and suitable for the situation, but the main focus should be on the rest of the diet.”
“
I haven’t read the research in question, but it sounds really smart.
Hall says that the single most important amino acid for muscles is leucine.
“There has probably been quite a lot of that in the EAA used in this study. Other good sources of leucine are basic whey or milk protein, meat also has quite a lot of it.”
Salin according to Schawarzenegger, the research shared will mainly benefit gym-goers aiming to lose weight or who are on a diet.
“Of course about that [tutkimuksesta] it can also be useful for those who do physical work, but fewer of them want to be in an energy deficit,” says the expert.
