Formula 1 always travels in a double dimension, divided between present and future. At the moment the attention of most of the teams at the political level is focused on 2026, year in which they should enter into force i new regulations on power units. The goal is to simplify the current V6 hybrid engines, introduced in 2014 and which will remain frozen in development starting this season and until 2025, also improving their sustainability, financial and environmental impact.
The new era of F1 closely affects many car manufacturers, given that in addition to the groups already present in the Circus – Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault and Red Bull – Audi, Porsche and even Honda are waiting at the entrance door, intending to return in the turn after the abandonment at the end of 2021. The concrete decision on what will be the actual rules of engagement for the new generation of engines, however, is slow in coming. Obviously, this waiting impatient above all the houses that are concretely evaluating their entry into the category, but it certainly does not help those who are already present either. In fact, it is necessary to be able to to plan this type of work, very delicate and with impacts that can potentially last years, well in advance.
For this reason the Mercedes, big disappointment in this 2022 season start, is doing pressure on the FIA to formalize the structure of the new power units in the shortest possible time. “We are very interested that the engine regulations are actually passed, because we want to get on with the work – said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, as reported by the site RaceFans – but they also have to be done right. I am in solidarity with the FIA in order to get the right result “.
The Austrian manager, however, did not make any particular hesitation in outlining what he believes would be one correct deadline to define the work bases. “I think it’s not easy, with all the historical manufacturers and new power unit suppliers, to get to a point where we have the detailed regulations ready to be signed. – Wolff recognized again – but I hope it doesn’t drag on too long. I hope that all this will be defined during the summer, so that we can start the autumn season with the regulations on engines ready “he concluded.
