The districts with the highest number of requests are the Ponente, Valbisagno, the historic center and Valpolcevera
Genoa – “The people who turned to the Caritas listening centers in Genoa went from 5405, in 2019, to 6202, in 2020, with an increase of 15% but first accesses increased by 48%“So Lucia Foglino, head of the Observatory on Poverty of the Genoese Caritas.
«One thing to underline – he added – concerns the disparity recorded in the neighborhoods of our city. The most numerous requests for help were recorded in the Ponente, Valbisagno and Valpolcevera and in the historic center which are traditionally the most popular areas, with more young people and with a higher percentage of foreigners ».
From a social point of view, there was a 65% increase in foreigners, especially women, “For 2 reasons – underlines Foglino – or because they have lost their jobs, perhaps as housekeepers or carers, or for the ancient reason that, in case of difficulty, it is almost always women who go to ask for help”. The data shows that the highest number of the first accesses was registered between people who lived on citizenship income or with precarious or irregular jobs and that, very often, they also rounded up with other undeclared income, or workers in layoffs who did not receive the subsidy in the correct time.
There have also been cases “not high numbers but that cause concern” of families who found themselves asking for help because the only entry was the retirement of an elderly person who is dying, often for covid, has left family members without money.
