Warm front hits Rio Grande do Sul with storms in several cities; the volume of the Guaíba reaches 2.45 meters at the Mauá pier
The State of Rio Grande do Sul once again recorded flooding in its capital, Porto Alegre, this week, due to heavy rains. According to the MetSulthe region has been facing a new hot front since Tuesday (June 18, 2024), causing heavy rain in several cities and localized storms with incidence of lightning and hail in several municipalities.
In Greater Porto Alegre, rainfall volumes until the end of the morning this Wednesday (June 19) were 72 mm (mm) in Barra do Ribeiro; 56 mm in Canoas; 49 mm in Gravataí; and 33 mm in São Leopoldo.
In addition to the intense rain, the pump house in the São Geraldo neighborhood stopped working for hours, according to MetSul, which also contributed to several parts of the northern part of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul being flooded.
“Once the rain continues, the rainfall accumulations tend to rise even further over the next few hours, with locally excessive marks”said in report card.
GUAÍBA GOES UP AGAIN
Due to the storms, the level of Guaíba also rose. At Mauá pier, in the historic center of Porto Alegre, the water volume reached 2.45 meters, with a tendency to rise.
The increase in water levels was expected, as the flow of rain over the weekend is reaching the Porto Alegre area in the basins of the contributing rivers.
However, despite the rise of the Guaíba, MetSul warned that the flooding in Porto Alegre is due to the rains of the last few days and not due to the advance of the water body over the city.
This is because Guaíba is below the pier’s overflow level of 3 meters.
On Sunday (June 16), the northern part of the state recorded heavy rain, with 100 mm to 200 mm in several municipalities.
However, this week, it is the cities in the south and central parts that have suffered from the highest volumes of water, especially in the strip of territory that goes from Alegrete to Porto Alegre.
