Race basically flag to flag for Scott McLaughlin, started in pole position and first at the finish in Portland at the end of the 110th race. The Penske driver was not the subject of team games in favor of Will Power, second at the finish line and championship leader when only the Laguna Seca appointment scheduled for next week, decisive for the award of the title, is missing. .
Scott Dixon, in fact, it is still in full swing. The veteran of the Ganassi team, who started in the belly of the group, managed to climb up to the third final position which places him 20 points behind Will Power, the same gap that Josef Newgarden pays, who had to deal with the tire curse hard in the final stint of the race characterized by a caution that compacted the group, condemning the two-time IndyCar champion to a final suffering against drivers equipped with soft tires.
The caution was caused by a dubbing of Rinus Veekay against Jimmie Johnson at the end of which the Dutchman squeezed the innocent American driver against the wall. To better set the first chicane, Veekay moved to the left, triggering an equal wheel contact that was fatal for Johnson. They completed the top-10 Pato O’Ward, Graham Rahal, Colton Herta (ever closer to F1 with AlphaTauri, only missing a discount on the FIA Super License), Alexander Rossi, Josef Newgarden, Callum Ilott and Felix Rosenqvist. O’Ward himself made Power tremble. On the occasion of the restart, the Mexican attacked the Penske rider with a decidedly optimistic braking that triggered a contact in which only Pato was affected, who ended the race with the left rear wheel cover damaged.
