The success of the plot of Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela, based on the book A Color Defect, by Ana Maria Gonçalves, boosted the publication’s sales. The book is going into its 30th edition, with the special edition launched in 2022
“It's very interesting to see how well two diverse cultural manifestations work, such as literature, which you imagine in a peaceful environment so that reading can take place, and the samba school, which is the opposite, it's color, music and movement. It's the book meeting the asphalt. It is wonderful. Only in Marques de Sapucaí can such a phenomenon happen”, said, this Wednesday (14), the president of Grupo Editorial Record, Sonia Machado Jardim to Brazil Agency.

Sonia recalled that it is common to pay homage to authors and book characters in samba schools. The Grande Rio samba school, for example, had as its plot Our destiny is to be jaguars, based on the work of Alberto Mussa My destiny is to be a jaguar: Tupinambá myth. The book deals with the creation of the world and the role of the jaguar in the imagination of the Brazilian people

The executive editor responsible for Ana Maria Gonçalves' book, Livia Vianna, highlighted that, since 2017, the title A Color Defect has been growing, accompanying a “greater mobilization of the country around racial issues, in search of the unofficial history of our colonized country”.
Throughout 2023, there were many conversations with Portela. “Ana Maria Gonçalves became very close to the school. We had a signing event at the court, where the book sold out. It was very beautiful to see Ana Maria joining the Portela community and vice versa. She became a beloved person at the school, very present, participating in workshops and reading clubs”, said the executive editor.
The author Ana Maria Gonçalves was not found by Brazil Agency to comment on the boost that Portela's plot gave to the sales of her book.
