Brasília, 2 – The movement of the port sector in 2021 grew 4.8% compared to the previous year, with 1.210 billion tons of cargo handled. According to the National Agency for Waterway Transport (Antaq), the number represents a new record in the country. The data were released this Wednesday, 2, by the agency in balance on the data of the segment last year.
Antaq’s expectation is that, in 2022, port activity will continue to grow. Studies by the agency indicate that, this year, 1.239 billion tons will be handled, up 2.4% compared to last year.
“For the next four years, the agency expects to maintain the upward trend in port traffic. In 2026, the expectation is that the national port sector will handle 1.402 billion tons, against 1.360 billion tons in 2025”, pointed out Antaq.
The handling of containers and loose general cargo are among those that had the greatest advance in 2021, with growth of 11% and 11.3%, respectively.
Then came the liquid bulk, which recorded an increase of 8%. Solid bulk handling grew 1.8%.
According to Antaq, among the main cargoes, iron ore remains the largest in quantity, with 370.4 million tonnes handled last year, an increase of 4% compared to 2020.
