Porsche is studying a system to transform camera images and sensor data in a kind of video game to play comfortably at home.
Basically, the program Virtual Roads Porsche’s goal is to collect data, for example the width of the carriageway, the bumps, the type of road surface, and their transfer to a database linked to an existing racing simulator (the German company has indicated Assetto Corsa as a possibility ). Thanks to a specific editor, the data builds a kind of new circuit, perfectly mapped, able to be walked in virtual mode. Let’s imagine a specific case as a very boring journey from Lecco to Milan: the system could map the freeway that connects the two cities, transforming it into a hyper-fast route to try and try again at home.
Initially the project, carried out by Porsche together with Way Ahead Technologies, it will be launched on a smartphone application; in the future it will also be implemented on the most popular driving simulators. The layout, which will not forget the representation of guard rails, trees and bridges, it will be performed with minimal effort compared to what is done by large digital studios working on major video games. Consequently, the level of realism of the scenarios will not be to the millimeter. However, it will be sufficient to allow the recognition of the fundamental measures of the roads traveled, which is what counts.
Obviously it is assumed that the system will give gamers the chance to travel along the roads registered by other drivers, thus giving willingness to a Brazilian citizen to travel an Alpine pass, or to an Italian to whiz along the roads of the Australian coast. “After several years of development work, our software is now so advanced that it can digitize routes up to eight kilometers in less than an hour, depending on the complexity of the track.“Said Roger Rueegg of Way Ahead Technologies. There is however room for further improvement.
