First circuit tests in Europe a few days after the Californian presentation. Qualities of a thoroughbred sportswoman, excellent management of the exuberant drive torque. Clever mechanical and electronic balance to allow even common drivers to have fun in safety
An expanding family. The Porsche Taycan becomes GTS and adds a new element to the lineup created in Zuffenhausen in 2019 to attack the luxury electric sports car market. The newcomer Gts (presented in mid-November during the Los Angeles Motor Show) goes beyond the 4S and stops before the Turbo. Power and torque of the highest level, technical refinement and, above all, an attitude up to tradition. Even on the track. And a very efficient management electronics that allowed, while driving normally, to exceed 500 km of autonomy: 504 km to be precise. It will arrive in the spring of 2022 at a price of 137,231 euros in Italy. After all, it is a Porsche through and through.
How the Porsche Taycan Gts is made: design and interior
The aesthetic differences of the Taycan Gts compared to the other models in the family are concentrated in the black or otherwise dark external details, such as bumpers, mirror caps or side window moldings. The daytime running light bezels are in matt black, while the inserts in the side sills and rear diffuser are in glossy black. Instead, satin black was chosen to paint the standard 20-inch wheels. The passenger compartment is decorated with numerous elements in black anodized brushed aluminum. The sport seats with high lateral support are electrically adjustable in 18 positions with memory function. The upholstery is standard in Race-Tex microfibre and Alcantara with black leather details. As in the other Taycans, the duplicated central display for driver and passenger (optional) stands out, in addition to the screen in the central tunnel, always touch, but the traditional analog clock (optional) in the center of the dashboard resists.
Engines, battery, range and Taycan Gts chassis
We summarize the sophisticated technical equipment of the Porsche Taycan Gts. There are two electric motors, one on each axis. In most situations, only the rear engine with its transmission acts mainly, which uses two ratios instead of a single gear as normally occurs in electric cars. This is because the drive torque is so high that it requires a different setting in the transfer of force to the wheels. The front engine is instead combined with a single ratio. All this makes it possible to obtain four-wheel drive with variable torque distribution, to which is added the torque vectoring system, i.e. the electronically controlled distribution of the drive torque between the wheels of the same axle. The independent wheel suspension (aluminum) uses a double wishbone pattern at the front and multilink at the rear. The shock absorbers are pneumatic and adaptive, a system managed by Porsche Active Suspension Management with specific adjustment for the Gts. The power steering assistance is obviously electric. The chassis with rear-axle steering can also be requested as an option. The stock brakes use internally ventilated cast iron discs with six-piston aluminum calipers at the front and four at the rear; diameter of the front discs 390 mm (thickness 38 mm) and of the rear 358 mm (thickness 28 mm). Carbon ceramic brakes are available on request, with tires in size 245/45 R20 at the front and 285/40 R20 at the rear. The battery has a capacity of 93.4 kWh and allows a maximum range of 504 km Wltp in normal use on the road. For recharging, stations with power up to 270 kW can be used. The AC connection on the wallbox takes nine hours to fully charge. In direct current at 50 kW it takes 93 minutes to go from 5 to 80% charge, while at maximum power, where available, it takes about 22 minutes to return to the same level.
Porsche Track Precision app, we are all engineers
The Gts is the first Taycan (and the first Porsche of the 2022 range) to have the Porsche Track Precision application, which in the coming months will also be extended to other cars of the German brand equipped with the sixth generation Porsche Communication Management, i.e. the PCM 6.0. . This software, which can be installed on both Android and Apple smartphones, interfaces with the on-board systems and records all the data coming from the sensors during the lap on the track. Various telemetry elements, including lap time, are also shown on the car’s display in real time. Therefore, those who regularly attend the circuits can analyze all this information to improve their performance, but the data can also be combined with the video taken via smartphone or action cam, to have a very detailed analysis of the lap.
Porsche Taycan Gts, the track test
An electric car is heavy, the large battery penalizes it, then the protections against overheating prevent it from fully exploiting the power, even when it is high. Mental associations not always valid, and not necessarily. During its first two years of life, the Taycan has already shown that it knows how to do it between chicanes and straights. And the new Gts? We were able to put it to the test from this point of view during a short test in Spain, on the Mallorca circuit, a short and very winding track. Just what it took to test its dynamic qualities. The summary is clear. Taycvan Gts is a real, thoroughbred sports car, like a Porsche should be. It goes as you want it to go. Ready to react, always very authoritative when entering a bend and on the tracks when it exits. Driving it, it appears much lighter than it actually is. The management of the exuberant engine torque (750 newton meters without overboost, otherwise 850 when the launch control is activated at the start) is perfect, always remembering that in an electric motor it is all delivered, right from the start of acceleration. , so it can be much more complicated to unload it on the ground without causing wheel spin. The different riding modes offer an increasing degree of “bridle loosening”, but always maintaining control of the situation. So even those who are not professional drivers have the right to have fun on the track, being able to count on electronic eyes that intervene appropriately when needed and to the extent necessary to ensure safety, without exceeding in “intervention”. Even the wet, within reasonable limits, becomes less problematic. In conclusion, the Taycan Gts transfers authentic driving pleasure to electric propulsion. Moreover, of course, he is also very strong. The reproduction of “engine noise” via the audio system? Some like it, others don’t, a matter of taste. It is wisely button activated, so everyone can choose whether to hear it or not.
Pros and cons Porsche Taycan Gts
Like it: amazing cornering behavior in relation to power, and it’s not just the lowest center of gravity compared to a thermal car; electronic management of the very high engine torque, optimally calibrated to maintain control without sacrificing the sportiness of the whole; the Porsche Track Precision app adds fun to fun.
Do not like: the simulated engine noise can be perplexing, it is a good thing that they did not pretend to reproduce a petrol engine, but the artificial impression remains.
Porsche Taycan Gts, prices and options
Luxury cars are always “dressed” tailored to the customer, so the list price has a relative meaning. The basis for the Italian market is however, turnkey, of 137,231 euros. The most important options include: Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport package, € 3,355, roll stabilization with electromechanical bars active on both axles, to reduce lateral lift when cornering; steering rear axle, 2,391 euros; track-approved braking system with carbon fiber reinforced ceramic discs (Pccb), from 9,162 euros; Porsche Design Subsecond analog watch, € 1,030; head-up display, 1,634 euros; night vision assistance, € 2,269; passenger display, 1,049 euros.
