Travelers who want to drive over the Reschen Pass must be prepared for traffic jams. The route is closed until December and alternatives have been put in place.
Reschen – The Reschen Pass route, which is particularly popular with travelers to Italy, along the famous reservoir, from which the church tower of the flooded village of Graun protrudes, is currently completely closed. Detours have been put in place for cars and RVs.
Reschen Pass closed: Rocks cause traffic restrictions until 2026
While the closure in September only applied from Monday to Friday, the route has been completely closed since October 8th to December 16th ADAC communicates. This applies both during the week and on weekends and during the day and at night.
The reason for the two-year traffic obstructions is that the Reschen federal road B180, also known as the Reschenpass, between Pfunds and Nauders has a 400 meter long rockfall gallery in the section between Tschingelsgalerie and Kanzelkehre.
Falling boulders on the Reschen federal road in Tyrol make construction work indispensable
Over the past few years, boulders have repeatedly broken out of the steep, rocky and unstable terrain above the road. In February 2024, a 20 by 30 centimeter boulder hit a bus on the B180.
Not least because of the church tower, the pass is a popular alternative route for travelers who want to avoid the traffic jam route via the Brenner motorway. It leads from Landeck through the Inn Valley over the Reschen Pass into the South Tyrolean Vinschgau.
Reschenpass diversion for cars has been set up – other vehicles have to detour widely
Travelers in cars will be redirected via the Engadiner (B184) and Martinsbrucker Straße (B185) and thus partly across Swiss territory. The detour is around 6.6 kilometers and means a delay of 15 to 20 minutes.
However, this route may not be used by trucks, vehicles with trailers over 6.5 meters and buses over 13 meters. These must bypass the closure extensively.
However, there is a special regulation for mobile homes, like this ADAC announced on its website. You can use the diversion regularly. However, this only applies to caravans if they are shorter than 6.5 meters.
However, if you want to use the diversion via Switzerland with a motorhome over 3.5 tons, you have to go to the Swiss customs office in Martina and pay 5 euros per trip and vehicle.
Further full closures on the Reschen Pass are planned for the coming years
In the winter season 2024/2025, i.e. from December 20, 2024 to March 9, 2025, the full closure will be temporarily lifted. The Reschen Pass will then be accessible in two lanes, he said ADAC further.
During these periods, further closures are planned for 2025 and 2026:
- March 10, 2025 to May 2, 2025: Full closure with diversion
- May 6, 2025 to August/September 2026: single-lane traffic with traffic light regulation
- September to November 2026: The road will be closed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the finalization of the expansion work and asphalting work
Other major construction sites in Austria are causing traffic jams
There may also be increased traffic jams on the Brenner in the near future. On the Brenner motorway A12 From January 1, 2025, fewer lanes will be available for several years. The reason for this is the dilapidated Lueg Bridge. There can also be traffic jams on the Tauernautobahn A10, as several tunnels there are being renovated. (ck)
