Brandsma, murdered by the Nazis in Dachau in 1942, was of great significance for public life, especially in Oss and Nijmegen. The recognition of the miracle now paves the way for canonization. It is not yet known when that statement will be issued.
Brandsma had already been beatified as a martyr in 1985 by Pope John Paul II. Despite the hell of the concentration camp, he continued to encourage and inspire other inmates there. The miracle attributed to Brandsma revolves around a Florida priest who miraculously recovered from cancer in 2004. This cleric wore, among other things, a small piece of a Brandsma suit on his head, incorporated into a hat.
The cardinals and bishops, who are members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, already gave a positive advice on canonization of Titus Brandsma.
