Pope Francis prayed this Sunday (5) for the victims caused by heavy rains that hit Pernambuco and left more than 100 dead and approximately 10,000 homeless in 27 municipalities, according to the latest official data. “I wish to assure my prayers for the victims of the landslides caused by the torrential rains in the metropolitan region of Recife, in Brazil”, said the pontiff to the thousands of faithful gathered in St. of Pentecost.
According to the latest Civil Defense report, 127 people died in the state of Pernambuco. The capital Recife and the metropolitan region were also hit by the storm that ravaged the region since the end of May. The heavy rains caused the overflow of rivers and landslides that swept away houses, mainly in the municipalities of Camaragibe, Olinda, Paulista and Jaboatão dos Guararapes.
