Pope Francis and the President of the United States, Joe Biden, met this Friday (29) at the Vatican, according to the press office of the Holy See. The meeting lasted about 75 minutes and was much longer than usual be those of the other heads of state who visit the bishop of Rome.
The US Executive delegation, in addition to the president, included the First Lady, Jill Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
After the meeting with Pope Francis, the US head of government met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, who will participate in the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), which begins this Sunday.
Solution to the environmental crisis
Also this Friday, the pontiff sent a message to the British network “BBC” demanding political leaders who will participate in the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) for “urgency” in the search for solutions to the environmental crisis.
In the video, Pope Francis spoke about the current situation, in which we find ourselves “fragile and submerged in a series of sanitary, environmental, food, economic, social, humanitarian and ethical crises”. For the pontiff, “every crisis requires vision, planning capacity and speed of execution, rethinking the future of our common house and our common project”.
The pope called on political leaders for “a renewed global co-responsibility, a new solidarity founded on justice, on sharing a common destiny and on an awareness of the unity of the human family.”
In addition, he recalled the appeal made days ago by religious leaders and scientists, for “more responsible and coherent actions”, even addressed to government officials.
“On that occasion, I was impressed by the testimony of one of the researchers, who said: ‘My granddaughter, who has just been born, in 50 years, will have to live in an uninhabitable world. We cannot allow it,'” said the leader of the Catholic Church.
The 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change begins this Sunday in the city of Glasgow, UK. The Vatican delegation will be led by Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
