A director of the United Nations children’s agency, Unicef, said this Thursday (13) that poor countries in December refused more than 100 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 distributed by the Covax Facility consortium, created for acquisition. and distribution of immunizations to developing countries.
Etleva Kadilli, director of Unicef’s Supplies Division, told the European Parliament that the main reason for the refusal was because the doses were too close to expiry date.
Kadilli added that poor countries have also been denied vaccines due to insufficient storage facilities and the resistance of a large part of the population to be vaccinated.
Unicef has not said how many doses have been refused in total so far. The Covax Facility consortium has already delivered 987 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 to 144 countries.
