POLLS TODAY 14 AUGUST 2021
POLLS TODAY – The clear majority of Italians are in favor of the legalization of euthanasia, a proposal at the center of a collection of signatures for a referendum promoted by the radicals. This was stated by a survey BiDiMedia, according to which 62% are in favor of legal euthanasia and only 20% are against it.
The proposal to legalize the so-called “active euthanasia”, allowed in countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium, receives an absolute majority of support among all age groups, with peaks among the youngest. In fact, 70% of those between 18 and 24 and 72% of those between 25 and 34 say they are in favor. The age group in which the greatest number of people against it was found is that between 45 and 54, in which those in favor are still 52%, more than double the 25% of against.
The consensus for legal euthanasia is also remarkable when considering voting intentions. The only party in which the opponents exceed those in favor is the Brothers of Italy, with 42% compared to 38% of those in favor. Even in the Lega, the politically closest party to that led by Giorgia Meloni among those included in the survey, those in favor of the proposal (43%) outnumber those against (36%).
The largest share of people in favor was found among the voters of Volt Italia and + Europa, the party in which the radicals converged, with 97%, followed by 92% of the Article One, Sinistra Italiana and Possibile parties, gathered in the last elections. in Free and Equal. Very high percentages of supporters were also recorded among the voters of the Democratic Party (85%) and Movimento 5 Stelle (73%) while for those of Forza Italia the figure is 55%.
In Italy currently euthanasia, understood as the direct administration of a lethal drug to the patient who requests it, constitutes a crime while medically assisted suicide is allowed, following a sentence of the Constitutional Court.
In 2019, the latter declared that “whoever facilitates the execution of the suicide intention” is not punishable, provided that the person who requests it is fully capable of understanding and willing, suffers from an irreversible pathology leading to severe physical or psychological suffering and survive thanks to life-sustaining treatments. The Consulta ruled on the case of Marco Cappato, a self-reported radical exponent in 2017 after having accompanied Fabiano Antoniani, known as DJ Fabo, to Switzerland to obtain assistance in voluntary death.
How surveys are done
The electoral and political polls are carried out by opinion polling societies respecting very specific scientific criteria. The authors of the surveys must identify a sample to be interviewed that is sufficiently large and representative of the population to be analyzed. In the case of polls on voting intentions for parties or the confidence index of political leaders, therefore, the interviewees must adequately represent the Italian population of age, those who have the right to vote and who go to the polls.
This work is done to minimize the margin of error and make the detection as reliable as possible. Usually a political-electoral poll is considered reliable if the indicated margin of error is 3 percent with a 95 percent confidence interval. It is precisely that of identifying a representative sample of the population that is the greatest difficulty for pollsters. Interviews for political electoral polls are usually conducted with a Cati methodology, by telephone, or Cawi, via the Internet, or mixed. To carry out the interviews, opinion polling companies rely on specialized companies.
