Mario Draghi – Ursula Von der Leyen _
EU, von der Leyen’s confirmation is increasingly at risk. The race for the leadership of the European Commission
The Europeans they want Mario Draghi at the head of EU Commission. This is what emerges from a survey of European citizens carried out at the end of May. The survey was conducted by the opinion research institute Polling Europe. The question was direct: “Who do you prefer between Draghi and von der Leyen as the next Commissioner of the European Union?”. The answers were surprising, the former Italian prime minister came out on top. The 49% of those interviewed choose Draghi while 47% prefer there outgoing president von der Leyen. The survey was conducted – reports Il Corriere della Sera – on a representative sample of the European population over 18 years old (but in Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria people already vote at 16 and in Greece at 17), tested the notoriety and approval rating of some potential candidates.
It must be kept in mind, however, that the President of the European Commission he is not directly elected by the citizens. It is the heads of state and government, who sit at the European Council, who designate the leadership of the community executive by a qualified majority, taking into account the results of the polls. Draghi – continues Il Corriere – is in the lead in Italy (68%) and Southern Europe (59%), von der Leyen in Germany (45%), Spain (56%), Northern Europe (54%, ten points more than the former ECB president), Central and Eastern Europe (53%). In France, however, where the National Rassemblement is ahead according to polls, Draghi obtained just 33% and von der Leyen 29%. What will the European Council decide? there still remains an unknown. Until a few months ago, von der Leyen’s reappointment was taken for granted. Now the leaders do not want to reveal their cards. Negotiations will begin on Monday.
