At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Poland, the process of seizing two buildings belonging to Russia began in Warsaw. This was reported on March 1 in the Polish department.
These are the buildings at 100 Sobieski Street and 45 Kieletska Street in Warsaw. According to the Polish Foreign Ministry, they are not used by the Russian side for diplomatic and consular purposes.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applied to the competent government authorities with a proposal to initiate enforcement proceedings in respect of two real estate objects that are not used for diplomatic and consular purposes and are in the illegal possession of the Russian Federation, located at the following addresses: st. Sobieski, 100 and st. Kielecka 45 (school building. – Ed.), ”the ministry said in a statement.
As indicated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these objects will be transferred to their rightful owner – the State Treasury of the Republic. Those buildings will then house people who have arrived in the country from Ukraine, the ministry said in a statement.
The Polish side claims that a number of diplomatic properties used by the Russian Federation in Warsaw and Gdansk are not formalized in any way from a legal point of view. In addition, the Foreign Ministry noted that there is no prospect of finding a solution to this issue in the foreseeable future.
At the same time, Moscow believes that the objects of Russian diplomatic real estate located on the territory of Poland are the property of the Russian Federation.
In particular, Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreev said that the Russian diplomatic mission would deal with the legal aspects of the decision of the Polish authorities to seize two Russian buildings belonging to the Russian Embassy. He confirmed that the building on Sobieski Street was indeed empty, but noted that “the situation with the school is completely different.”
The process of seizure of property began against the backdrop of aggravated relations between Russia and the European Union after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Russian Federation of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
Then the Russian Defense Ministry stressed that nothing threatens the civilian population of the country. Only military infrastructure is disabled by high-precision means of destruction.
Prior to that, on February 21, President Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR, as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.
