Santiago de Chile.- Chilean police investigate the disappearance 10 days ago of British astronomer Thomas Richard Marshwhose trail was lost near the international observatory of La Silla, in the north of the country.
Marsh, 61, has been missing since September 16 and the Police are looking for him near the La Silla observatorymanaged by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in the town of La Higuera, about 600 km north of Santiago.
“There are a large number of officers deployed on the ground in order to be able to give a prompt response regarding the disappearance of this person,” said the prefect of the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI), Carlos Albornoz, in a communication sent to AFP.
Marsh’s daughter, Tabitha, posted the following message on social media a few days ago: “This is my father, Tom Marsh. He has been missing in Chile for almost a week. Please share this, we are desperate to find him.”
Marsh was last seen on the morning of Friday, September 16. He had arrived in Chile two days earlier to make use of the observation instruments of the international observatory within the framework of scientific research carried out at the University of Warwick in England.
The La Silla observatory is located in the southern part of the Atacama desert and at an altitude of 2,400 meters, considered one of the best places for astronomical observation in the world.
The regional prosecutor of the city of Coquimbo, Adrián Vega, explained that for now no hypothesis about his disappearance is ruled out. One of them is that it disappeared when it fell into one of the ravines that surround the observatory.
“Indeed, the English citizen could have gone trekking to the place and gotten lost; therefore, the area is being combed (tracked) with different types of technology,” Vega said.
