The enmity between two of the suspects of sexually assaulting an inmate from Campos del Río forces extreme security at the Court
The appearance yesterday at the Provincial Court of four women, all of them accused of the sexual assault on an inmate of the Campos de Río prison, was held between strong security measures to prevent any incident, both due to the special conflict of some of the prosecuted as for the pending accounts that they maintain between them and that raised fear that confrontations would take place. Up to four agents of the National Police closely watched, at all times, the four defendants, who were summoned before the court to assess whether there was any option to pass a judgment of conformity; that is, that an agreement be reached between the defenses and the Prosecutor’s Office that would allow them to be sentenced without the need for a trial to be held.
However, the position of the representative of the Public Ministry was of total opposition to the possibility of closing a conformity, mainly due to the extreme gravity of the facts of which these four women have been accused. Specifically, the public prosecution asks them for a total sentence of 56 years in prison and the payment of compensation of 3,000 euros for the alleged sexual assault on a Campos del Río inmate with whom they shared a stay in that prison.
The events occurred on the afternoon of January 3, 2019, when the women lured the victim to some toilets in the courtyard and one of them allegedly inserted her fingers into her vagina in search of drugs, since it was suspected that she was carrying narcotics hidden after having had an encounter vis a vis.
They allegedly took her to some toilets in the prison yard and put their fingers in her vagina in search of narcotics
Then, not finding the drugs, they squatted her down and apparently tried to make her defecate in a bag, thinking that she might be hiding them in her rectum. The providential intervention of the prison officials, who called one of the alleged aggressors to appear for a control, would have put an end to the harassment.
The main suspect is Esmeralda MM, while her three companions, Dolores HM, María MC and María Belén MA, are accused of collaborating in a necessary way for the alleged sexual assault to be consummated, since they allegedly immobilized the victim and monitored so that no one could help her.
The Prosecutor’s Office claims fourteen years in prison for each of the defendants
The prosecutor attributes the crimes of rape and injuries to the four women and claims fourteen years in prison for each of them.
At present, two of the defendants are at liberty, while the other two remain imprisoned. The enmity between the latter is, apparently, so intense that they had to be taken to the Provincial Court separately.
Melecio Castaño, Esmeralda MM’s lawyer, affirmed yesterday to THE TRUTH that an agreement was not reached, not only because of the seriousness of the facts that must be prosecuted, but because the accused “flatly deny the facts and defend their absolute innocence.”
