The Ferrari Finali Mondiali returned home in 2021. It was in fact the Mugello, a circuit owned by the Cavallino, that hosted the edition that ended today with the shifts reserved for the Club Challenge. An event that saw Ferrari Challenge drivers arrived from all over the world despite travel restrictions imposed by COVID, but which was also a great party for the employees of the Maranello company, who were the only spectators to have access to the Tuscan ups and downs.
A plant that is a world-class flagship and therefore these Finals were also an opportunity for the director Paolo Poli to take stock of a season that probably went beyond expectations, starting precisely from what it happened over the weekend.
“We have here the best customers in the world of Ferrari, even in significant numbers, especially if we consider that many have had to make transoceanic journeys to get there. And it is not a trivial thing, even for those who can afford it. the quarantines, the customers responded enthusiastically and I want to think that it is not only for Ferrari, but also because we are in Italy and because we are in Mugello, and it’s all added value, “said Poli.
“There was a great synergy between Ferrari and Mugello, but also with the whole territory. Unfortunately today’s rules allowed us to let only 2,500 people enter the stands and Ferrari has decided to involve its employees, also to repay them for these. two complicated years and make them part of the end-of-year party “, he added.
2021 saw 14 race weekends, but over 200 days of track activity. These are really important numbers if you think that we are still in the midst of a pandemic. Perhaps the only regret is having to compete in the Italian MotoGP GP behind closed doors.
“It was a pity not to have the opportunity to let the public access the MotoGP race, since it was also Valentino Rossi’s last race at Mugello. quite certain that next year we will be able to host spectators again, we also hope for an important number “.
The MotoGP race was also tainted by the tragedy of the disappearance of Jason Dupasquier, who was run over after being left in the middle of the track following a crash at Arrabbiata 2 during Moto3 qualifying. Even in this sense, Mugello is confirmed as being at the forefront, given that the plant is ready to introduce panels for light signals.
“We must try to minimize the residual risk on the case of an investment accident. We must try to communicate with the pilots in the shortest time and in the most obvious way possible so that we can understand that a pilot in a battle may not see a yellow flag, for him it is a fuzzy dot in the distance. I hope and want to hope that a bright LED can be seen more easily, which is more immediate and striking “.
Last year Formula 1 also made a stop in Tuscany. A great celebration coincided with the thousandth Grand Prix in Ferrari’s history and which seemed destined to remain a one-off. In Poli’s mind, however, there is the hope of bringing the Circus back to Mugello, especially in a historical moment in which calendars are often changed during construction.
“If we have to wait for the expiry of the contract in 2025 with Monza to bring Formula 1 back to Mugello? I hope to succeed even sooner, because last year’s race seemed impossible until a short time before, and yet we succeeded. “.
Meanwhile, the certainty for 2022 is the return of MotoGP, but also the desire to try to broaden the horizons. Maybe just trying not to lose a character like Valentino Rossi who historically filled the hills of Mugello with his fans and will go from two to four wheels next year.
“The calendar will see last year’s appointments confirmed starting from the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix, in addition other championships will be added that will be revealed shortly. Our focus is on pursuing new objectives that give more and more prestige to the international arena. Italy and the racetrack “.
“The possibility is also being studied of being able to bring the championship in which Valentino Rossi will decide to participate by car starting next season on our circuit. In reality, however, we will also have to see in which direction his choice will evolve”.
And here also came a dig at other more protected realities and therefore in some ways facilitated to obtain great events.
“In this struggle between racetracks to grab the best projects, we are a private racetrack that has to make up for it at the end of the year, while other structures linked to the area car club, to a municipality or a province, perhaps manage to have some additional facilitation “, he concluded.
