Poland has proposed to the European Union (EU) to completely stop trade with Russia. On Saturday, March 19, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters.
“Poland proposes to add a trade blockade to this package of sanctions as soon as possible: both seaports — a ban on the entry of Russian ships under the Russian flag with Russian goods into ports — and a ban on trade by land,” the Polish TV channel quoted him as saying. TVN24.
Morawiecki expects the leaders of European countries to “sober up” and adopt a new package of anti-Russian sanctions at the next meeting.
He emphasized that Russia should be completely cut off from trade, which, in his opinion, will give Moscow pause.
A day earlier, Morawiecki announced the beginning of the “derussification” of the economies of Poland and Europe. According to him, “de-Russification” will mean giving up Russian energy sources – oil and gas.
In turn, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called this statement by Moravetsky discrimination and nationalism.
On March 15, the fourth set of EU sanctions against Russia came into force. Sanctions prohibit new investments in the energy sector of the Russian Federation, exceptions include peaceful atom and transportation of energy resources to the EU. Individuals and organizations are also subject to EU restrictions.
Sanctions against Russia were imposed after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 the launch of an operation to protect civilians in the Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence. On February 21, Putin signed a corresponding decree.
