Concentrated in no man’s land, the ‘undocumented’ attack Warsaw security forces with stun grenades
The tragedy haunts the border between Poland and Belarus. So far eleven people have died in different circumstances, all of them emigrants. None of the deaths appear to have been motivated by violence, but the rising tension bodes ill.
The Warsaw Government released videos on Tuesday in which it was observed how its army used tear gas and water cannons to stop the refugees who attacked the soldiers with stones and sticks from the other side of the fence. They even went so far as to throw stun grenades that the Belarusian Army would have passed them.
Apparently their objective was to open a hole in the fence to be able to pass, something they have tried for several days without success. So far the Polish soldiers have managed to stop all the attacks, expelling the migrants, who have always been forced to return to the makeshift camp near the Bruzgi-Kuznica border crossing. There, 3,000 to 4,000 people, many of them Iraqi Kurds, struggle to overcome freezing temperatures and lack of food.
In the fight on Tuesday, which lasted for two hours, one of the police officers was “seriously injured”, with broken cranial bones after receiving a blow to the face. A soldier was also hit by a stone in the face, while the Border Guard reported several injuries in their ranks. The latter appear to have suffered blows to the arms and legs.
Defense Minister Marquéz Blasczak thanked the military for the response and confirmed that all of them will receive an economic bonus for their current deployment. He added that the refugees are armed with stun grenades that they throw at the officers and accused the Belarusian forces of handing them over to them.
Fast forces
The European Union is working on the creation of European military groups that allow the rapid intervention of the European bloc with up to 5,000 troops in emergency situations, including threats such as migratory pressure orchestrated by Belarus. The Defense Ministers of the Twenty-seven on Tuesday gave the first go-ahead to the proposal of the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to create forces to allow a more “rapid, decisive and robust” response to crisis situations .
It is the star initiative of the new Defense of the Twenty-seven strategy, called ‘Strategic Compass’ and which aims to strengthen the bloc’s military capacity to increase its resistance to threats.
