The Polish government will send MiG 29 fighter jets to the air base in Ramstein, Germany, which will be available to the United States for transfer to the Ukrainian air force.
The Polish government has reported that the country is ready to make immediate and free delivery. The United States has been asked to provide “used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities”.
“The Polish government also requests that other NATO allies – owners of MiG-29s – act in the same line. Poland refers to Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania which also have fighter units. The United States has not yet commented on the Polish decision.
The supply of fighter jets to Ukraine began to be discussed after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky asked NATO for new aircraft at the start of the conflict with Russia.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday urged Poland to send its Soviet-era fighter jets to Ukrainian pilots.

Sending the planes to Germany at the disposal of the United States could mean that the Polish government does not want to be responsible for a possible Russian offensive.
Russia has reacted to the sending of NATO planes to the Ukrainians and has said that if any aircraft open fire on Russian forces, the Kremelin will blame the original owner.
The logistics of how the planes could be delivered to the Ukrainians are also questioned, since the Russian military is in Ukrainian territory and has already attacked and destroyed several air bases in the country.
