UKRAINE, SALVINI VISITS THE BORDER: “WE HELP THOSE WHO ESCAPE THE WAR”
Today Matteo Salvini made a stop in the Caritas center in Rzeszów and in two places on the border between Poland and Ukraine: Przemyśl and then Kijowska. In the latter case, a humanitarian corridor to Italy is already active which last week allowed the arrival in our country of women and children with the Onlus Partition. Rzeszów is home to one of the most important humanitarian presidia in all of Poland. Before the conflict, it offered assistance mainly to the homeless. Now it has become one of the main hubs for sorting out aid to Ukraine and for refugees hosted in Poland: those responsible have updated the Lega delegation (in addition to Salvini, there are the parliamentarians Marco Campomenosi and Luca Toccalini).
Above all, long-life food products are needed, as well as medicines, of course.Caritas highlighted the extraordinary generosity of Poles: there are no refugee camps in the country because – despite the massive arrivals, up to 100 thousand a day – the state and especially families have it threw open structures and private homes that absorbed the requests for help. Concern is high for the next few weeks, when a sharp drop in temperatures is expected and the arrival of even more fragile people is expected. At the moment, many families have reached Poland capable of moving with private vehicles or with relatives abroad (therefore with a defined final destination).
In the near future, mainly people without support and generally less well-off will knock on the border. Salvini thanked the volunteers “for their extraordinary commitment which is an example for all”, but stressed that all of Europe must make themselves available so as not to leave Poland alone. A concept that the leader of the League has also highlighted several times to Prime Minister Mateusz Jakub Morawiecki with whom there has been an exchange of messages even in the last hours. The humanitarian emergency is tangible in the border towns. In Kijowska, a few kilometers from Ukraine, a shopping center has been completely emptied to make room for people on the run, including many children, placed on emergency beds.
The number of those present – according to some humanitarian organizations – has increased visibly compared to last week and continues to increase. People are placed in the corridors and in what used to be shops. , military and several volunteers. Realities from all over Europe offer passes by word of mouth or by showing signs. In some cases, families show sheets with the desired destination indicated.
“We are not interested in the controversy of the Italian or Polish left, we are here to help those fleeing the war” says Salvini. Tomorrow a bus will leave to bring 50 people to Italy. Given the dramatic situation, another mission has been scheduled to depart for Saturday, which will deliver diapers, powdered milk, creams and medicines to Poland. The goal is then to return to Italy with some Ukrainian families. To solicit further help, Salvini made a video appeal on his social pages.
