Former Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in an article for Der Spiegel magazine criticized Germany because of the refusal to supply Ukraine with weapons and put forward a loud demand to change the position and restore “shattered confidence”.
The politician titled the publication “Whoever is against weapons for Ukraine is for the war.” He said that Germany had learned the wrong lessons from its history and found German inaction frightening – but it is not necessary to talk about it in full, since Berlin contributed to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. According to the diplomat, the Germans work for themselves, but refuse to do so when it comes to Ukraine.

According to Sikorsky, the United Kingdom, the United States, small countries bordering Russia, “but not the Germans” supply Kiev with weapons. He added that Germany and France are violating the rules of the Lisbon Treaty, which involves the joint definition of strategic goals and security interests by the states of the European Union (EU).
The politician associated the crisis around Ukraine with this aspect. He stated that instead of complying with the agreement, the Normandy format and the Minsk agreements arose. Paris and Berlin took on the mission of a peaceful settlement, but without the participation of EU institutions and countries such as Poland, which directly borders the crisis region.
Sikorski pointed out that Poland, in percentage terms, spends more on defense than Germany. It is unfair, he said, for poorer countries to provide security for the rich on NATO’s eastern flank.
“But above all, the largest country on the continent must finally at least begin to take its security policy seriously and restore its shaken confidence in itself,” concluded the ex-Foreign Minister of Poland.
Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov called on Germany to stop blocking arms supplies to Kiev through the NSPA (NATO Support and Procurement Agency, NATO Support and Procurement Agency). According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, he was surprised by the position of the new German government on the issue of providing military assistance to Ukraine.
In December 2021, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel personally denied the supply of arms to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The current authorities adhere to the same position: the current Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, also refused the request to provide military assistance to Kiev.
