In the Ukraine war, Russia seems to be careful not to directly attack any NATO country. Nevertheless, Poland is once again sending fighter jets into action.
Warsaw – In Ukraine War F16 fighter jets could also be involved in the near future, as the deployment by Kiev’s supporters is said to be imminent. In return, Moscow, in the person of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, once again threatened an escalation and reminded people of its own nuclear weapons arsenal.
But Russia still has no need to worry about its air sovereignty. The regular bombings from above are the best example. Civilian targets are also repeatedly targeted by the Kremlin chief Wladimir Putin troops sent into battle. Despite modern air defense systems from NATO-States, the damage caused by Moscow is considerable.
Poland in Ukraine war: Fighter jets take off due to Russian threat
As Ukraine’s immediate neighbor, Poland is also on constant alert. To protect itself from the aggressor and probably also as a deterrent, the Air Force occasionally sends some of its jets into the air. As was the case on the night of Saturday (June 1).
While most Poles were sleeping or getting ready for the weekend, the Warsaw Armed Forces Command announced via Twitter announced that on Friday evening it had detected “intensive activities of the Russian Federation in long-distance air traffic in connection with air and missile attacks on objects on the territory of Ukraine”.
As a result, “all necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace” were initiated. Because Polish and allied aircraft “were activated,” there could be “an increased noise level, particularly in the southeastern part of the country.” It is possible that many citizens were woken up at the start of summer.
Poland launches fighter jets: “Long, busy night for air defense system”
About three and a half hours later, something like the shortened final report for the public. The operational command spoke of a “long, busy night for the entire air defense system in Poland.” At the same time, it was announced that the aviation of the Polish army and its allies had been suspended “due to the reduced threat of missile attacks by Russian aviation on the territory of Ukraine.”
The deployed armed forces have resumed normal operations. Nevertheless, it is clear from the lines that it is not only the invaded neighbor that is in a state of emergency. The message also contains a reference to a “massive long-range missile attack” by Russia, which has affected, among other things, the regions bordering Poland. In other words, the west of Ukraine, which has been largely spared in more than two years of war.
“The attacks were carried out with cruise missiles, unmanned Shahed aerial vehicles and ballistic missiles fired from the Black Sea region,” Poland’s armed forces said. Possibly also by the Crimea which Ukraine lost to Moscow in 2014 and is now attacking from the air itself because of the constant threat from there. Kiev will probably also get the green light for attacks with Western weapons on military targets on the Russian mainland; US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have both expressed this view.
Putin and the Ukraine War: Would he allow the march on Poland if Kiev fell?
Warsaw, meanwhile, is one of Ukraine’s most determined supporters. Also for self-interest: a simulation from the time before the Russian attack on Ukraine is said to have revealed that Poland could only resist Moscow’s troops for a few days. So if Putin does achieve his goal and Kiev falls into his hands, Warsaw would probably be within his reach quickly. Even if he would have to cross the NATO border to do so.
The fear that Russia would continue its war of aggression if successful is still great in the West. Despite the immense losses, more than half a million Men and women sent to the front by the Kremlin are said to be dead or wounded by now.
The Polish army does not want to be surprised or caught off guard. The situation in Ukraine is therefore being continuously monitored, it said. The armed forces are “always ready to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.” In the past, the Russian ambassador had already been summoned for this reason. (mg)
