[Rassegna stampa] – There is no peace for the Sprint Race in Formula 1. Opposed by most of the public, imposed from above above all to try to generate more spectacle, the ‘sprint qualifications’ – as they were renamed last year, making purists turn up their noses who would always want pole position assigned by the flying lap – they already seem at risk of extinction, at least partially. The problem, as almost always in the Circus, is economic. The idea of increasing the number of ‘mini-matches’ to be played on Saturday from three to six started from the top of the sport to generate a greater return on income. On the money, however, we got stuck.
The three great teams – Mercedes, Red Bull And Ferrari – they would like an increase in the budget cap (set for 2o22 at 140 million dollars) to cover any damage caused to the cars during the Sprints. The rest of the group, however, led by McLaren, disputes this request, considering it a way to circumvent the spending limit, imposed precisely to try to lower costs and rebalance performance between teams. The story is difficult to solve and could even lead to the cancellation of this format, at least for this season. In this case, we would talk about it again in 2023. The topic was also dealt with by Corriere della Sera, in an article signed by Daniele Sparisci.
“[…] F1 aims to double the number of events to six […]. But to change the rules in the race, a qualified majority of the teams is needed, at least eight out of ten must be in favor. With a simple majority alone, the reform would postpone to 2023. At the center of the battle is the extra money to be distributed to the teams to offset the additional expenses […]. For these reasons, the large stables are asking for greater economic guarantees […] and threaten to blow the bank if they are not satisfied. Requests range from $ 2 to $ 5 million more to add to the budget cap […]. On the other hand, Zak Brown opposes,[…] the claims of the big names would be masked attempts to circumvent the “budget cap”. […] in February, before the tests, the F1 Commission will go to electronic voting and it will be known if the sprints will enter the 2022 calendar. […]“.
