PODCAST | A military vice president for the streets of Valencia

When no one defends the actions of the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, in the management of DANA, his strategy is to resist in office. Just after attributing the serious repercussions of the flood, in which at least 220 people have died, to supposed “failures of the entire system”, Mazón hides behind the appointment of a retired military officer, Lieutenant General Francisco José Gan Pampols, as vice president of the Generalitat Valenciana and gives him the powers of reconstruction and recovery of the affected areas. Is it a decision that symbolizes the natural integration of the military into our democratic society? Or is it a symptom of how profiles of authority, order and anti-politics make their way in a disappointed society?

With Adolf Beltrán, director of elDiario.es in the Valencian Community, we try to interpret what messages are sent with the appointment of this soldier as a high political official in the midst of social trauma. With Zaida Cantera, ex-military and PSOE deputy, we talk about the value of the military at the head of management in civil administrations, and with José Enrique de Ayala, retired brigadier general, and member of the Alternativas Foundation, we point out what the president intends Valencian with this appointment.
