Credit to SMEs, there is a risk of a tsunami of bankruptcies
Se Il Sole 24 Ore, the Confindustria newspaper, writes that SMEs are starting to sweat cold as regards the system of public guarantees, it means that the alarm is there, beyond the usual announcements. Just to give an idea of the size of the problem: until 2019, the co-guarantee mechanism was worth around 1.5 billion euros. And the dynamic was decreasing. Then, with the pandemic, the state had to reach into its wallet and pump liquidity. Arriving at 10 billion euros per year of guarantees.
A necessary measure that has allowed the economic system – made up of over 90% of small or micro-sized enterprises – to hold up despite two months of total paralysis and 18 months of significant and obvious limitations. But now the emergency is over, the situation is complex, the economic crisis is appearing on the international scene. And we need to make ends meet. The temporary framework, i.e. that “window” of extraordinary measures, has reached the end of its mission. We reiterate, accomplished. But now we need to understand how to move.
