For a gradual electric transition, car manufacturers often advise their customers to approach the world of battery-powered cars step by step, and then choose a model. plug-in hybrid instead of a fully electric one. But are we sure that the PHEV versions are really green as almost all companies claim? It would seem not, given that on several occasions studies have been carried out that have found it emissions two and a half times higher as stated by the manufacturers for what concerns the rechargeable plugs.
As today’s edition of Il Corriere della Sera explains, this latest research that points the finger at plug-in hybrid models comes from Switzerland, but others have preceded it: among all the one carried out in 2020 by the ICCT together with the Fraunhosioni fer Iis, according to which in real conditions the PHEV they travel with the combustion engine alone for more than half the time. In short, we need more clarity on this, and for this reason it seems that the European Commission is thinking of reviewing the WLTP approval test by 2025, precisely to make it more reliable in evaluating Plug-In Hybrid. As mentioned, we are talking about a technology that serves for a gradual approach to pure electric: for this reason many analysts agree that within three or four years the plug-in hybrid it will be abandoned permanentlygiven its complexity that is unlikely to reach cars for the general public.
We were talking about a recent study carried out in Switzerland on the real environmental footprint of this type of cars, commanded by the company Impact Living, founded by Marc Muller. The results of this research were so surprising and considered reliable that the Canton of Valais decided to revoke incentives for PHEV models. This is because, according to the results of the study, it was found that PHEV vehicles emit 2 to 3 times more CO2 than declared by the manufacturers: it happens when the battery is flat, when the internal combustion engine has to take on the weight of the vehicle, increased for electrification. “The Italian government should consider the plug-in hybrid car as a thermal carconsequently making them pay the right price for climate protection “advised Marc Muller.
