The last one State of Play from Sony has been seen more times than any of the company’s E3 conferences.
Sony’s latest State of Play event – which included trailers for Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6 and Final Fantasy 16 – was seen more than once of all the conferences at E3. With 2.52 million views, it has officially surpassed the 2.51 million views of E3 2016 and the numbers are still increasing. Meanwhile, September’s two previous PlayStation Showcases rank above both with 4.9 million views (2020) and 3.9 million views (2021).
The YouTube channel of PlayStation has grown significantly over the past five years or so, and E3 conferences have historically been broadcast through a variety of different channels – this perhaps helps to show why Sony has changed tactics. E3 press conferences are notoriously expensive to produce, but the costs associated with a traditional pre-recorded State of Play are minimal.
This shows that the Japanese giant is having more success than ever by cutting out conventions and marketing directly to its consumers. While some miss the old days, Sony is reaching more fans than ever with its new approach.
And this success isn’t limited to Sony alone: 5.8 million fans tuned in to watch the latest Nintendo Direct, while this month’s Xbox Showcase drew 3.9 million views in about ten days.
