New day, new rumors about a PlayStation Showcase (or State of Play, depending on the source). Whether it is all true or all false, it is undeniable that the public is thirsty for news from Sony, given that list of upcoming exclusive games it’s really slim now that Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade have stepped aside.
Right now, there is talk of May 28th as a possible presentation date. Sony has announced the event several times with very little notice, hence the lack of official news it’s not a confirmation that the rumors are false, but it’s not a confirmation that they’re clearly true either. This doesn’t stop players from imagining what could be announced, including new games and re-presentations of already well-known names.
Obviously there will also be room for third parties in a Sony Interactive Entertainment event, but in that case it is difficult to guess what we might see. So for now let’s just focus on how much the PlayStation Studios teams could show in this rumored new PlayStation Showcase.
Between “certainties” and doubts of the PlayStation Showcase
If a Sony Interactive Entertainment event is coming, we can only have one great certainty: it will show Concord. Let’s talk about the online PvP first-person shooter Firewalk. This is a sci-fi title about which we know practically nothing, except that it is scheduled for 2024. With the first half of the year drawing to a close, it seems obvious that Sony will want to show it in depth at the first available opportunity , to start advertising it. Unless of course it has been postponed, but the latest indications are still this year.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, another well-known PS5 game, recently completed motion capture and dubbing and we don’t expect it to be ready by the end of 2024. Kojima himself talks about another 12 months of work before the completion of game, so it is more likely that the release period is scheduled for 2025. Also given that there was already a presentation at the beginning of the year, we believe that at this time the adventures of Sam Bridger will not have space in the Sony event.
For the rest, Sony has console exclusivity agreements for games like Silent Hill 2 remake (a release date could be the right announcement for the State of Play / PlayStation Showcase) and smaller productions like Sword of the Sea and Towers of Aghasba . There is also the remake of Until Dawn which could receive a new presentation, but we must admit that we would not see it as the highlight of the evening.
Obviously we hope that there will be room above all for new things but in this case we basically have to guess.
Naughty Dog in recent years it has been busy with the online version of The Last of Us (cancelled) and with the remake of the first chapter of the series and the remaster of the sequel (both already published): is it possible that they already have something new to show?
Santa Monica Studio published God of War Ragnarok in 2022, but also took care of the free DLC distributed at the end of 2023. We know that Cory Barlog (game director of God of War 2018, but not Ragnarok) is working on a new project, but we don’t know they are indications that he is ready to show something.
sucker Punch might want to share a teaser for Ghost of Tsushima 2, as it’s been almost four years since the base game and three since the expansion. We also know that there is no second project in the background, so a PlayStation Showcase would be the right time for a confirmation of the new game.
Speaking of teams that have been stagnant for some time, they are there Bend Studio which is stopped by the Days Gone teams, Bluepoint who hasn’t said a word since the Demon’s Souls remake (yes, we want Bloodborne remake now; no, we won’t get it), Team Asobi instead it could try the step forward with a more massive project after the works on Astrobot for VR and Astro’s Playroom for PS5, and finally Housemarque could be ready for its next project.
The possibilities are many but we suspect that very few of these teams will have anything to show for it. Certainly, in any case, they would all be projects for well into 2025. What are your hopes?
