Bungie seen as a ‘fundamental weapon’ for PlayStation.
A few days ago Sony announced that it had acquired Bungieteam behind Destiny 2. Since then, both social networks and newspapers have reported background and opinions on this acquisition.
Of course there is also GamesIndustry which, through an exhaustive article, explains why with the acquisition of Bungie, PlayStation is not only experimenting with multiplayer and live service games but is going all-in. According to the article, live service game publishing relies on multiple elements that need to work synergistically. Sony does not have much experience in this as during the generation of PlayStation 4 the company became famous for packaging successful but purely single-player games.
Now PlayStation is about to change this trend: already Naughty Dog is working on online multiplayer titles and in the future of Bungie there is a new IP as yet unknown. By acquiring Bungie, PlayStation now has the know-how on how to develop and maintain live service titles.
While it will take some time to see if the Bungie acquisition pays off, PlayStation’s plans have already been planned.
