It is not the first time that McDonald’s approaches the world of video games, just think of the case of the rare game for Nintendo DS, but this time a controller has been created for PlayStation 5 DualSense customized on a theme… but Sony does not seem to agree on the matter.
This is a particular year for the fast food company of the same name, as it comes to shopping 50 years since its opening. For the occasion, the celebrations of the event have been announced in recent days, ranging from an entire week of live streaming up to the giveaway of the brand’s special gadgets.
However, one object in question has aroused a lot of curiosity: it is a DualSense controller for PlayStation 5 customized with a McDonald’s theme. As you can see from the image below, they played on colors and on simple but perfectly recognizable shapes of the typical French fries and the famous Big Mac. However, despite the immediate positive response from collectors in front of the design in question, Sony has blocked the giveaway.
According to a press release, the 50th anniversary celebrations have been postponed due to “program changes”:
Sony has not authorized the use of the controller as promotional material in connection with the Stream Week proposal. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. The event has been postponed and copies of the PlayStation controller will not be included in the giveaway.
Instead of McDonald’s customized DualSense PlayStation 5 controllers, prizes will include subscriptions to streaming platforms and sweatshirts made specifically for the 50th anniversary of fast food.
The reason behind this decision has not been confirmed, but usually Sony is rather strict about customized accessories and skins remade for PS5 since its release last November. Suffice it to say that in 2020 the Japanese major forcefully forced retailers of customized accessories to cancel their orders, threatening them with legal action.
McDonald’s may have gotten into trouble with its special controller for a similar reason, but either way this means that it will be difficult for us to see this custom model: Sony’s intervention may have had more implications for hypothetical future plans for skins. controller in general, not just in this case.
In recent days, Sony has released the beta for the new PlayStation 5 update, which introduces compatibility with SSDs and other news. We refer you to our dedicated article.
