The cultural heritages that are part of the formation of Brazil are the theme of the Ancestralities platform, which will be launched this Monday (8), at 5 pm. The proposal brings together entries, biographies, historical facts and maps important organizations to understand black racial issues in the country. The initiative is a joint effort between the Tide Setúbal Foundation and Itaú Cultural.
In addition to presenting its own content, the platform will make links with information produced by other groups and organizations, based on a monitoring of current topics under discussion. “The idea is that we can make a stronger and more consistent space, which can be a hub [conector] that systematizes these works and that you play for the different nuclei that are dispersed”, he said, in an interview with Agency Brazil, the chairman of the board of Fundação Tide Setúbal and creator of the proposal, Neca Setúbal.
Ancestralidades will also offer courses and encourage research. Along with the launch, meetings will be held mediated by the project’s advisors: the writer Ana Maria Gonçalves, the philosopher Sueli Carneiro and the musician Tiganá Santana. The meetings, which will be broadcast live on the Itaú Cultural’s Youtube, will address the project’s axes: democracy and human rights; science and technology; arts and cultural. The first conversation will be on the platform launch day (8), at 5 pm, with the philosopher and professor at the Federal University of Bahia Eduardo Oliveira.
axes
Navigation on the platform can be done either from the structuring axes or through a timeline presented in a spiral mandala, in a concept of time that is not necessarily linear. Historical events and biographies were selected taking current events as their starting point. “It’s a platform that brings the whole concept of ancestry from the present moment, with its main events, stories and biographies that brought to this present moment today”, emphasizes Neca.
The content should serve as a research base, in Neca’s opinion, not only for scholars and groups that are already interested in racial issues, but also for sectors that are now beginning to pay attention to the subject. “It is a theme that is permeating the entire Brazilian society. It is obvious that the key is far from changing, but it is permeating Brazilian society in its different sectors: in companies, schools, universities”, he adds.
The use of the material and the possibilities must, according to the director of Itaú Cultural, Eduardo Saron. become clearer with the platform up and running. “The platform itself will move towards fulfilling a role beyond our organizations by being this hub [conector] of articulating space”, he emphasized in an interview with Agência Brasil.
The content, although carefully prepared, does not intend, according to Saron, to cover the entire theme. “We don’t intend to be exhaustive. We are part of the process that society and some sectors have been conducting”, he adds.
continuous learning
Within this dynamic, the idea is that, at some point, Ancestralidades will also incorporate issues related to Brazilian indigenous issues. The proposal for continuous improvement is itself, according to the institution’s director, one of the elements that lead to the construction of the platform. Ancestralidades takes advantage of practical experiences from Itaú Cultural, such as the visual arts encyclopedia, and discussions carried out throughout the space’s trajectory.
Saron recalls the situation in 2015 with the play Mulher do Trem, by Cia Os Fofos, which was accused of racism for using blackface – white actors with painted faces to represent black people in a caricatured way. The show, which was on display at Itau Cultural, was heavily criticized at the time for using the practice that has a racist history.
The director refers to the episode as emblematic for the institution and for himself. “A show that was already 11 years old. Shell Award. An impeccable group, they had a history in the theater and in the field of the performing arts”, he says about the surprise when the accusations of racism surfaced. “We turned that play that would go on stage at Itau Cultural into a great debate. And for us, it was a very watershed moment at Itau Cultural so that we could, in fact, deal with this matter”, he adds how the situation was resolved, with the piece returning to the stage without the use of blackface.
Thus, Saron considers the launch of the platform as an offshoot of the concerns that gained momentum at that time. “O [projeto] Ancestry is a moment to reaffirm this trajectory, for us to have a more organic conversation with the field so that we can enjoy, foster and create training processes”, he says.
Ancestry can be accessed at page of the platform.
