Deputies and senators criticize the lack of support for the request against the STF minister; Otto Alencar called it “petty squabbling”
Federal deputies and senators of PL maintained pressure in favor of the impeachment of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, STF (Supreme Federal Court), after the leader of the PSD in the Senate, Otto Alencar (BA), criticize and call it “nitpicking” the demands for his party to support the request for the magistrate’s impeachment.
As shown by the Poder360the former president’s party Jair Bolsonaro have raised their tone because the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), has not followed through on the more than 20 impeachment requests against Moraes. Congressmen and activists have begun asking voters not to vote for candidates from the party led by Gilberto Kassab.
To this digital newspaper, the leader of the PL in the Upper House, Carlos Portinho (RJ) – who was elected as a substitute for the PSD – said that “thank God” migrated to his current party. The congressman stated that “parties signal the country’s direction”.
“I respect parties and institutions, but the positions of each will always be subject to scrutiny by voters. After all, we live in a party democracy under the 1988 Federal Constitution, and parties signal the direction of the country. Yes, we are different.”
The deputy and leader of the Minority in the Chamber, Bia Kicis (PL-DF), made a more incisive criticism, stating that the PSD “is aligned with those who do not want to take the pen out of the hand of the biggest tyrant in Brazil” and who supports the campaign against the acronym.
The leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Marcos Rogerio (PL-RO), adopted a more moderate tone and stated that “all senators are free to support or not the request”.
According to the senator Marcos Pontes (PL-SP), the party’s congressmen “fulfill their responsibility to the Brazilian population in defending true democracy and freedom” and colleagues “those who are aware of their responsibility to the Brazilian people should join the PL’s efforts” in the impeachment of Moraes.
Bolsonaro’s former minister also criticized the progress of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) into Covid, which he called “biased”. The board was mentioned by Otto Alencar in his video (watch below).
“Anyone with a modicum of common sense can clearly see the biased conduct of the CPI. In fact, in Otto’s own words it is clear that the investigation conducted had already had a determined result from its beginning.”declared Pontes.
The federal deputy and vice-leader of the PL, Luciano Zucco (PL-RS), said that “who lives in the political world” should be “used to the pressures” and that, in this case, “all demands are legitimate when the cause is noble”.
“The impeachment of a Supreme Court justice who committed several types of crimes. Society wants to know how the parties position themselves and how the senators think”said the deputy.
Although many members of Congress support Moraes’ impeachment, this has more symbolic than practical political weight. The impeachment process for Supreme Court justices must be initiated in the Senate. If the Senate president decides to move forward with the process, the trial will be the sole responsibility of the senators, without the direct influence of the members of Congress.
UNDERSTAND
In a video, the senator from Bahia criticized the PL and said that the party does not have a history of “wanting to find out absolutely nothing”.
“If there is a party that cannot hold the PSD accountable, it is the Liberal Party. This entire party remained silent on the biggest problem that has happened in Brazil recently, which was the pandemic. We created the CPI to show that the president [Jair Bolsonaro] was not committed to the lives of the Brazilian people. Furthermore, the top leaders of the Liberal Party do not have this history, this tradition, of wanting to investigate absolutely anything, especially the impeachment of anyone. None of them.”he said.
The PSD leader also stated that names aligned with Bolsonarism, such as the president of the Progressives and former Minister of the Civil House of Bolsonaro, Ciro Nogueira (PI), also did not support the impeachment request.
“It is important not to try to distort this statement, trying to blame it on the PSD. The PSD has conducted itself correctly in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, strictly within the rules and the law, on the part of its senators and federal deputies. And also on the part of our president Gilberto Kassab. We have to help Brazil. Think about Brazil. This petty squabbling does not deserve our sincere consideration.”
