Bolsonaro’s sigla secured command of 10 city halls in municipalities with more than 200 thousand voters in this first round of voting; Lula’s PT only won two
The PL, party of the former president Jair Bolsonarowas the one that elected the most mayors in this 1st round of the election in municipalities with more than 200 thousand voters, a group known as G103. There were 10 members of the acronym who won this Sunday (October 6, 2024) in these large cities.
The 2nd party that elected the most mayors in this group was União Brasil. He secured command of 8 of the largest municipalities in this 1st round of voting. 3rd place went to the PP, with 7 elected.
The president’s PT Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaoccupies 8th place in this rankingwith 2 city halls won, tied with PSDB and PSB.
In addition to those elected now, 52 cities will decide their mayors in the 2nd round, on October 27th. The PL has names in 23 of these municipalities and can further increase its participation in G103. The PT competes with 13 other candidates in this group.
In 2020, the MDB and PSDB had been the parties that elected the most mayors in these largest cities, with 17 each, considering the 2 rounds of voting.
Lula’s PT had its best moment in 2008, when it won control of 28 of these large municipalities. In 2012, there were 19. After that, with the impeachment of Dilma Rousseffthe party fell into disrepair. In 2016, only 1 name was chosen from this group. In 2020, it gained a little strength and took command of 4 of these cities.
The PL did not count on Jair Bolsonaro’s influence in the last election (the former president only joined in 2021). Now, he has shown strength by boosting the party’s elected officials in this 1st round.
There hasn’t been a 2nd round yet, but the PSDB has already secured its worst result at least since 2000 in the big cities. In 2020, it had elected 17 mayors in the largest cities. He came to command 28 municipalities in this group in 2016. Now, the tucanos only elected 2 names and have 5 in the 2nd round.
This tendency for the PL to advance in large cities was anticipated by the Power360. In July, September and October, this digital newspaper published surveys with the most recent electoral polls available on G103 indicating the party’s strength.
