Senator for Bahia responds to criticism from PL supporters of Bolsonaro who are campaigning against the PSD; the demand to support the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes is “petty” and “does not deserve consideration”
The senator Otto Alencar (BA), leader of the PSD in the Senate, responded this Monday (23.Sep.2024) to criticisms that the party has received from members of the PL. The main reason is that the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), has not followed up on the more than 20 impeachment requests against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court). “This little squabble does not deserve our sincere consideration”said Alencar.
In video (watch below)the senator from Bahia criticized the PL and said that the party does not have a history of “wanting to find out absolutely nothing”. As shown by the Poder360co-religionists and supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have raised their voices against the legend led by Gilberto Kassab and request that the electorate not vote for party candidates.
“If there is a party that cannot hold the PSD accountable, it is the Liberal Party. This entire party remained silent on the biggest problem that has happened in Brazil recently, which was the pandemic. We created the CPI [Comissão Parlamentar de Inquérito] to show that the president [Jair Bolsonaro] was not committed to the lives of the Brazilian people. Furthermore, the top leaders of the Liberal Party do not have this history, this tradition, of wanting to investigate absolutely anything, especially the impeachment of anyone. None of them.”said Alencar.
The PSD leader also stated that names aligned with Bolsonarism, such as the president of the Progressives and former Minister of the Civil House of Bolsonaro, Ciro Nogueira (PI), They also did not support the impeachment request.
“It is important not to distort this statement, trying to blame it on the PSD. The PSD has conducted itself correctly in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, strictly within the rules and the law, on the part of its senators and federal deputies. And also on the part of our president Gilberto Kassab. We have to help Brazil. Think about Brazil. This petty squabble does not deserve our sincere consideration.”
According to the website VotoSenadores, which compiles support for the impeachment request of Moraes, 36 senators are in favor, 29 did not express an opinion and 16 are against. The PSD, which has the biggest bench of the Upper House, released its members to decide whether to support the text or not.
Read below how the PSD senators positioned themselves:
- in favor of the impeachment request against Moraes: Lucas Barreto (AP); Plinio Valério (AM); Nelsinho Trad (MS); and Vanderlan Cardoso (GO);
- against: Otto Alencar (BA) and Omar Aziz (AM);
- did not manifest themselves: Rodrigo Pacheco (MG); Angelo Coronel (BA); Bene Camacho (MA); Daniella Ribeiro (PB); Irajá (TO); Jussara Lima (PI); Mara Gabrilli (SP); Margareth Buzetti (MT); Sérgio Petecão (AC) and Zenaide Maia (RN).

“Furthermore, the top leaders of the Liberal Party do not have this history, this tradition, of wanting to investigate absolutely anything, especially the impeachment of anyone. None of them.”
“And another thing, the PSD released the bench. Any senator who wishes to analyze the impeachment request or the request and believes that there is a specific fact for this, he or she is free to sign. But what catches my attention is that Bolsonaro’s main voters, now, in the recent 2022 election, did not sign. I have absolutely nothing against this or that person not signing, but, for example, Senator Davi Alcolumbre [União Brasil-AP]chairman of the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee, has not signed it yet. The chairman of the Progressive Party, Senator Ciro Nogueira, has not signed it either – and he was Bolsonaro’s Chief of Staff. Other senators, for example, Senator Romário, from the state of Rio de Janeiro, who is now even supporting the candidacy of our PSD candidate from Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, have not signed it either.
“So, it is important not to distort this statement, trying to blame it on the PSD. The PSD has conducted itself correctly in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, strictly within the rules and the law, on the part of its senators and federal deputies. And also on the part of our president Gilberto Kassab.
