The Azerbaijan Grand Prix didn’t start very well for Charles Leclerc since the lights went out, an occasion in which despite an excellent clutch detachment he was unable to maintain the leadership to the advantage of Sergio Perez, who started very well from the front row alongside the Monegasque. The ko of Carlos Sainz – problems with the hydraulic system for the Spanish driver who saw the words ‘brake by wire failure’ appear on the steering wheel – gave Ferrari the opportunity to be aggressive on a strategic level.
On the occasion of the Virtual Safety Car resulting from the knockout of F1-75 # 55, the Ferrari wall promptly called Charles Leclerc to the pits to switch to hard compound tires, saving about ten seconds thanks to neutralization. With the medium tires, in fact, as in Miami, Red Bull showed a certain superiority in the first stint of the race, with Verstappen who was able to stay under the second behind Leclerc, even if then on the long straight the Dutchman has never even joined the Ferrari driver.
Charles Leclerc’s pit stop was quite long, but the problems encountered are certainly not attributable to the mechanics’ uncertainty in changing tires regularly and without delays in preparing the material. Forcing Ferrari to stop for 5.7 seconds was a malfunction of the jack which lifts the car at the front. A detail that could have made a negative difference if Leclerc and Verstappen had been aligned on the strategies and therefore fighting for the position.
Another aspect therefore to be analyzed in view of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in addition of course to the wait for the reliefs which will be carried out tomorrow in Maranello on Charles Leclerc’s power unit. The smoke suggests that it was the heat engine that gave way, which had arrived at the second model of the season already inaugurated in Florida in Miami and then rotated with the first one in the previous weekends with the exclusive use of the ‘1’ engine in Monaco. The ICE that went up in smoke yesterday had survived the knockout in Barcelona, but in Montreal a third specimen will necessarily be needed.
