Here’s a sentence we never thought we’d ever write down: This is Pininfarina’s Straddle Tractor Concept. Certainly, the same Pininfarina who is responsible for countless Ferraris, Alfas, Lancias and Fiats, just to name a few.
You probably already knew that Pininfarina designs more than just cars. Bicycles for example, but also trains. And football stadiums. racing simulators. coffee machines. Even an Olympic torch. Suddenly designing a four-wheel machine for New Holland Agriculture doesn’t seem so special anymore.
Pininfarina’s Straddle Tractor Concept is designed to look like a champagne glass. No, this is not a joke. The tractor is intended for premium wine regions such as Champagne, Médoc and Burgundy. The paths between the vines of these orchards are apparently no wider than 1.5 meters and so they must have a narrow tractor. That champagne glass-inspired cockpit offers ‘exceptional’ views of the vines and benefits from ‘smooth and dynamic car-inspired lines’.
Kevin Rice — who you may remember from a small company called Mazda and a relatively unknown concept called RX Vision — is Pininfarina’s design boss. He says: ‘We have leveraged our skills acquired over 90 years to combine a unique and distinctive style and excellence, always putting human performance at the center of attention.’
