Pilar Alegría will be general secretary of the Aragonese PSOE after Villagrasa resigns from her candidacy

The succession of Javier Lambán in the Aragonese PSOE has already been resolved. If there are no surprises, Pilar Alegría will be the new general secretary of the party following the resignation of her only declared rival in the race for the party’s leadership, Darío Villagrasa. The mayor of Bujaraloz announced this Friday that he will not present a candidacy, while the minister formalized it shortly after at the party headquarters in Conde Aranda. In their interventions, both have launched messages calling for “unity”, and the spokesperson for the central government has already made it clear that she will have her opponent in the future executive.

The latest support received by Alegría made it impossible to sustain a candidacy for the former Secretary of Organization of the Aragonese PSOE, which had led him to evaluate the idea of an agreement with the leader of La Zaida that would avoid confrontation. That resignation is now a fact. Although in terms of number of members, for example, the support of the Zaragoza-Norte group led by Carmen Dueso would be more important, the change of side of the spokesperson in the capital, Lola Ranera, has been especially symbolic and almost definitive, with zero weight among militancy but whom – despite the doubts generated by his performance before the municipal elections in 2023 – Lambán did not hesitate to support to top the list. In the Lambanista ranks, the what has hurt deeply, but also the how: with a simple WhatsApp message sent by Ranera to the still general secretary of the PSOE to notify him of his change.

On Wednesday, Villagrasa called Alegría, without revealing the detailed content of the conversation, which would be aimed at establishing the first direct bridges between the parties. From the environment of the former number two of the party in Aragon secrecy is maintained, although contacts exist.

Meanwhile, Alegría and her team have maintained the “roadmap” already designed, which has led them to gather more and more support. This Thursday, the minister toured the Aranda region and the head of the Calatayud Community, again with the support of supporters and members. “She does not give up being general secretary,” they explain from those around her, suggesting that in the negotiations not even the election of the party leader would be resolved.

The most likely thing, if there is an agreement, is that the Villagrasa sector will be compensated with relevant positions in the socialist group of the Cortes of Aragón, where for now the most prominent deputies are aligned with Lambán. The mayor of Bujaraloz himself could replace the provincial secretary in Teruel, Mayte Pérez, as spokesperson for the Autonomous Chamber. Even so, in his words Villagrasa has “appealed” to the same climate of respect in each of the processes that have to come,” in reference to the provincial and local congresses.

All these doubts should be clarified before next Monday morning, when the deadline for submitting candidatures closes, although there was no need to wait that long. If Villagrasa manages to formalize his aspirations, Aragon would have been the only territory in which a minister presented by Pedro Sánchez would be forced to go to primaries – and, as party veterans repeatedly affirm, “the primaries are the the devil charges”-; By not doing so, Alegría becomes de facto the new general secretary of the Aragonese PSOE.
