Several people jumped from the eighth floor after a massive fire broke out in their apartment in Marseille, southern France, on Saturday.
A security source said that three people died while they jumped to escape the flames, adding that a fourth person survived. Media reports say the survivor is an infant.
Police said that at least nine other people were injured in the fire that broke out in the building in the early morning, and that two of them are in a critical condition.
French radio station France Info, quoting Dominique Lorenz, the public prosecutor in Marseille, said that the authorities believe that the fire was caused by an act of arrogance.
The radio added that two fires broke out, one on the sixth floor and the second in the staircase of the house.
The police initially said that the fire started by mistake.
On Twitter, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. Marseille Mayor Benoit Bayan also wrote on Twitter, describing the fire as a horrific drama, expressing his sympathy to those affected.
