The adventurer known as the “French Spider-Man” Alain Robert climbed one of the highest skyscrapers in the Spanish city of Barcelona, today, Saturday, without seat belts, taking his son with him for the first time.
“It’s different this time,” said Robert, as he prepared to climb a famous tower in Barcelona. My son is not a professional climber. So, I kind of feel responsible…I know he’s an adult…34 years old, and that’s his decision, but at the end of the day I’m his father.”
Under the gaze of passers-by and Spanish police, the 60-year-old adventurer and his son Julian climbed the Gloris Tower, formerly known as Agbar, a 144-meter-high glass-fronted tower.
“I feel a lot of pressure,” Julian said, just before starting to climb the tower. I’ve never felt such fear in my life before,” he said, adding, “I’ve done scary things in life, but… I’ve never been so afraid. Fortunately, I have my father who will talk to me and guide me.”
The duo completed their climb in less than an hour and were met by the police at the top, who escorted them down the elevator without arresting them.
Julian, who served eight years in the military and is a regular athlete, prepared for his first climbing adventure by watching videos of his father’s past adventures.
As for Alain Robert, he started his climbing journey in 1975, where he trained to climb slopes near his hometown of Valencia in southern France.
Since 1977, Robert has scaled more than 150 tallest buildings around the world.
Robert rarely gets permission to climb, always using his hands with climbing shoes and a bag of chalk powder, without the help of seat belts.
