“To combat obesity, we will soon not only have drugs available that can be administered through subcutaneous injections but also oral therapies to be taken no longer daily but also only weekly. Soon we will have even more powerful and innovative drugs which, however, will enter the Italian market in a few months, not before 2025. In the USA, thanks to these drugs, evidence is being recorded in terms of a significant reduction in the rate of morbid obesity”. Thus to Adnkronos Salute Luigi Piazza, honorary president of the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery, on the sidelines of the 32nd Sicob National Congress entitled ‘Obesity: in search of a new therapeutic alliance’, scheduled from 23 to 25 May at Giardini Naxos (Messina).
“The so-called medical therapy of morbid obesity by definition must be addressed and offered to those who need it, it must not be a cosmetic therapy – warns Piazza – it must not relieve the obese patient of his responsibilities regarding his health. I am referring to the change in lifestyle, to the observance of the rules of correct nutrition proposed by specialists. These drugs are certainly an additional therapeutic weapon that we now have, but which must be considered in its correct indication”.
The use of anti-obesity drugs “without medical supervision” can “represent a danger to the health of these patients – warns the expert – So the advice is always the same: rely on a multidisciplinary team because obesity is a multifactorial disease and therefore requires many specialists who collaborate together in order to develop the correct therapy for the obese patient”.
