The European Union establishes that, by 2030, all new buildings must be zero -emission buildings, and existing ones must be transformed into zero -emission buildings no later railings that integrate photovoltaic panels.
«80% of European buildings are inefficient and, in addition, are responsible for 31% of total energy consumption. This new Lumon Erailing system allows to reduce electricity invoices without the need for significant additional investment, ”explains Rubén Rodríguez Cañizares, technical project prescriber in Lumon Spain.
The new Erailing of Lumon technology combines the advantages of solar panels with an elegant and aesthetic railing solution for the facade. To do this, the solar panel cell is installed between the glass panels of the railing. This technology directs the energy collected to the electric or building electricity grid, thus providing clean and renewable energy.
«Reducing the carbon footprint of construction and housing is essential, and innovation plays a key role in this effort. Lumon Erailing integrates solar energy in urban construction without compromising the aesthetics of the building or requiring large structural modifications. The Erailing system is a significant step towards more efficient households and towards a more sustainable urban environment, ”says Risto Kivioja, CTO in Lumon Invest Oy.
For its part, Rubén Rodríguez adds: “This solution helps, both new and existing buildings, reach zero emissions while improving the energy efficiency rating (E), and allows a more efficient use of the soil in the new construction projects.”
When these railings are installed as part of the renewal of a facade, the electricity generated by Erailing can cover more than one third of the average electricity consumption of a two bedroom apartment. This is equivalent, for example, to the use of LED lighting for a year in a middle home in Finland, or load an electric car to travel approximately 1,500 km.
«However, it is important to emphasize that the estimated annual performance for a 6 -meter terrace is based on a terrace in Kouvola, Finland, with a production of 622 kWh. In countries like Spain, where the sun shines much more, it is likely that greater performance is obtained. In addition, electricity consumption in Spain is lower, which means that the proportion of electricity generated in relation to consumption could exceed ⅓, ”clarifies the company.
«The tendency towards buildings with more facade than cover allows photovoltaic railings to take better advantage of space, incorporating more panels on the surfaces. This is especially beneficial on the south and west facades, maximizing the use of the sun, a key resource in our country. This solution is ideal for buildings with small covers, increasing energy production without affecting the functionality of the building, ”says Rubén Rodríguez.
Capture solar energy through facades
The arrival of this product to Spain coincides with the completion of the first facade in Finland equipped with photovoltaic railings. This project, which began in 2022 with the Aleksanterinkatu 35 real estate in Lahti, Finland, has allowed the renewal of the facade and the terrace through a design process that has taken into account both urban aesthetics and energy efficiency.
The first experiences of users have been very positive and, in addition, this project has allowed the Aleksanterinkatu 35 real estate company to integrate its own electricity production into the energy consumption of property.
In the words of the president of the Board of Directors of Aleksanterinkatu 35, Lasse Aaltonen: «Lumon Erailing has been a perfect election. Everyone has responded positively to this solution and we have only received positive comments. Now, we are waiting impatiently the first production data ».
For his part, the project director, Petri Haaponiemi, of the Lumon Suomi Oy team, explains that the company wants to offer real estate companies and builders a new way of taking advantage of solar energy without complex facilities or large additional costs. “The terraces are often an infrautilized opportunity to capture solar energy, so we have created Lumon Erailing, which integrates this potential in everyday energy solutions,” concludes Petri Haaponiemi.
