The year 2024 the best bird photos have been selected in an international competition.
23,000 bird photos were sent to the Bird Photographer of the Year competition. Among the award winners is a Finnish cameraman Markus Varesvuon a picture of a dog sled in Kuusamo.
The award came in the best portrait category.
Varesvuo heard about his award during his filming trip in Norway. The busy cameraman couldn’t comment on his feelings out loud in the hidden booth, but he told HS that the picture required seven days of effort.
Varesvuo was aiming for a picture where the breathing mist of the dog star could be clearly seen. Many elements had to be right at the same time: the shooting location, the temperature and, of course, the ringing teas.
In the introductory text of the photo contest, Varesvuo describes the moment of shooting as follows:
“The hot breath of a lone fighter steaming in the cold air, captured by me sitting in a small photographic hide, enjoying the sounds and sights of this ancient spectacle.”
The competition the winner is Patricia Homonylon hypnotic image When Worlds Collide. It shows more than 4,000 birds that died after crashing into windows in Toronto, Canada.
“Every year, over a billion birds die in North America alone due to collisions with windows,” says Homonylo for the BBC.
The award for young nature photographer of the year went to Spain this year. 14 years old Andrés Luis Domínguez took a photo of a walnut tree from an interesting angle against an oak tree.
In this story, HS also presents other award-winning bird photos from 2024. All award-winning photos can be found in the competition from their own pages.
Correction 24.9. 1:27 p.m.: In the caption, it was originally wrongly written about a thunder forest. The bird is a dog star.
Correction 24.9. 14.19: The name of the Finnish cameraman is Markus Varesvuo, not Varessuo.
