Photography Top photographers photographed people with their pets around the world, and these images play an important role

Pets from all over the world will be featured in Tallinn Fotografiska’s extensive exhibition.

Ferret’s test is tight as it stares at the camera from its owner ‘s armpit. The essence of a dog dressed in a black elegant collar in a portrait-like shot, on the other hand, seems depressed.

And how many pets can fit in one bedroom? Many seem to have gotten to the bed next to the person.

Does it always happen that a pet and their owners start to resemble each other?

Tallinn Fotogafiskan Favorites – The Pet Show exhibition focuses on human loyal partners. The extensive exhibition showcases the work of 25 Photographers focusing on the relationship between a person and his or her pet.

Swedish photographer living in Copenhagen Lisa Strömbeck has long studied the power structures between humans and animals. According to him, they may not be easy to notice, as power is always mixed with the feelings people experience about their pets.

“Love and affection are the main reasons we keep pets. We don’t get a pet to keep someone in our power, but because we want to love and have absolute counter-love, ”says Strömbeck.

In her series Mammals, Lisa Strömbeck wants to show how similar we all are to mammals, even though animals are treated differently than humans. “Why is there still no law guaranteeing that all mammals, including farm animals, are allowed to breastfeed their children?” he asks at the presentation of his series.

Strömbeck made many works of art together with his former dog Ivan.

“As soon as I set up the tripod, Ivan ran to the scene and wanted to take a video or photo with me. My current dog Lili is the most fantastic dog I have ever had because she is so calm and loving. But he’s not a co-worker, because he doesn’t like being described. ”

According to him, pets as an art subject is not easy, as the works easily become something that is just cute. However, he believes that animal images have other important roles to play.

“It has been scientifically proven that there is a sharp rise in human oxytocin levels when looking at an animal. We need the hormone the most when we are stressed. ”

Same believes the Finnish photographer involved in the Fotografiska exhibition Akseli Valmunen.

Valmunen does not specialize in photographing animals and does not consider animal photography to be the toughest art form, but he thinks the Fotografiska exhibition is important so that people get something to think about during this time other than war or pandemic.

“I can’t look at dog pictures like art. I look at them in the same way as pictures of babies, I focus on the obvious. They are good stuff, ”he says.

Valmunen will take part in the exhibition with pictures he took at a monthly show gig at a research center in Korea specializing in dog cloning in 2016.

The center’s customers are wealthy people who are so attached to their dog that when it dies, they want a new one like this, a reporter Anu Nousiainen wrote in a report.

Researcher Wang Jae-woong has a cloned dog in his arms. The photo is taken from a story published in the Monthly Supplement in 2016.

Valmusen The pictures he took five years ago attracted tremendous attention. He was awarded the best young photographer in the Nordic countries, and in addition, the photos taken in South Korea received awards in both the Newspaper Image of the Year and Reportage of the Year categories in Finland.

“I was asked a lot about animal rights at the time, but I’m not an activist but a photographer. I may describe many extremes in a neutral way. I think that the thoughts and feelings that my pictures evoke in the viewer are more interesting than my opinion, ”says Valmunen.

Yet Valmus had no pets during the South Korean filming gig, but today he and his wife’s family includes Rescue dog Ruben.

“Ruben came to us from St. Petersburg and because of his background it has taken a lot of time. At first, it scared me and during the first year, it couldn’t be left alone for a moment, ”the photographer says.

The photography exhibition will also feature works by Elliot Erwitt, who has also been the director of the world-famous Magnum Photos photo agency.

Fotografiskan Valmunen thinks the exhibition is interesting because it successfully combines a pet theme, locality and big names, such as William Wegmanin, Martin Parrin and Elliott Erwittin.

“I am really happy that Fotografiska took my work next to their work,” says Valmunen.

Favorites – The Pet Show The exhibition will feature a diverse selection of pet photos. The approaches to the subject in the works range from humor, to poetry and documentary.

Which one looks like?

Gerrard Gethingsin a series of colorful portraits exploring the similarities between cats and their owners, Martin Usbornen the images are about abandoned hunting dogs and Dolly Faibyshevin the series features well-groomed animals at a Westminster dog show.

“With this exhibition, we want to show respect for our partners and their images in Western art tradition and popular culture. We focus the spotlight on the animals and look at them from all angles: as human partners, status symbols, friends and family, and as works of art, ”says Fotografiska’s website.

Sophie Gamand, an award-winning French photographer and animal advocate currently living in the United States, explores the relationship between man and animal in her work. For his Wet Dog series, he photographed dogs that had just been washed for grooming. He says he chose bathing as the shooting because it is very unnatural for the dog.

Bangkok-based Visarute Angkatavanich has become known for his photographs of fish.

Dolly Faibyshev’s Best in Show series depicts well-groomed animals at the Westminster Dog Show, where it’s all about image, appreciation and well-behaved pets.

New York-based Winnie Au photographed her dog Clementine for the international feminist Refinery 29 site.

British Tim Flach is interested in how humans shape animals and change their meaning. He wants to highlight the diversity of fauna in his work.

“I’ve always been amused by how comical dogs look when they have a collar. In my pictures, I wanted to turn that shame and sadness into something beautiful and majestic, ”says photographer Winnie Au.

Tim Flach’s highly stylized animal portraits are far from traditional nature portraits.
