When Kardashian wore Monroe’s dress to the gala last month, criticism quickly followed. A number of Monroe experts soon joined the discussion and did not hesitate to give an opinion to, for example The New York Post. “I am deeply disappointed that this dress, an icon of 60 years old, is being worn in public. The dress is extremely fragile and has been preserved to this day in rooms where the temperature has been adjusted to the fabric,” said Michelle Morgan, the author of a book about the American icon.
It now appears that the dress is actually damaged. The famous tight-fitting robe was sold in 2016 for just under 5 million dollars to the Ripley’s believe it or not museum in Orlando. Monroe wore the iconic gown in 1962 during her legendary performance of Happy Birthday for President John F. Kennedy (JFK) his 45th birthday in New York. It was one of the last public appearances of the actress, who died a few months later at the age of 36. JFK was shot dead in Dallas the following year.
